Winner of a BALI Award for Design Excellence in 2007

The garden surrounds a beautiful ancient Somerset longhouse. The garden was plain and badly needed structure and form. There was a swimming pool already in existence but it was isolated and needed to be adopted into a garden plan. A timber pergola was needing enlargement and modification. There was an old tarmac farmyard within a courtyard setting at the rear of the house. The levels of the entire garden needed consideration and my clients who entertained frequently wanted garden lighting and proximity to terraced areas from the house.

The garden now links beautifully with pathways, retaining walls and steps. Beds and borders interweave a tapestry of colourful planting based on yellow and blue. Verticals have been formed using fastigiate yews around the swimming pool area. There is a greenhouse and a small formal parterre for vegetables and cut flowers. The rear courtyard is hard landscaped in materials that are sympathetic to the house, the retaining walls and steps are curved and bear direct relationship to the simplistic circular lawn that occupies the interval between the buildings. The composition is punctuated by beds and borders and tropical planting. The whole arena creates a feeling of well-being. The spaces are illuminated at night exuding a completely different atmosphere.
